Sierra Nevada by e-bike: a day in the mountains from Granada

From almost anywhere in Granada you can see the mountains: the Sierra Nevada, the highest range in mainland Spain, rising right behind the Alhambra. Most visitors only look at it. But it is close enough to explore in a morning, and an electric bike is one of the best ways to do it.

The Sierra Nevada in a few facts

  • Highest peaks in mainland Spain: Mulhacén (3,479 m) and Veleta (3,396 m). Veleta is the peak you see from the city.
  • Protected since the 1980s: a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a Natural Park since 1989 and a National Park since 1999.
  • Europe's southernmost ski resort is here, in the municipality of Monachil.
  • A Moorish name: in al-Andalus the range was called Sulayr, "mountain of the sun", for the way the snow shines in winter.
  • Huge variety: from river valleys with poplars and chestnut trees to bare high peaks, with ibex, eagles and many plants found nowhere else.

The high peaks are for experienced mountaineers. But on the western side, close to Granada, the lower and middle slopes are gentle, green and full of life, and that is where an e-bike day trip goes.

Why explore it by e-bike?

The Sierra Nevada starts climbing as soon as you leave the city. On a normal bike, that means a hard workout, and many people would spend the day looking at their front wheel. With an electric bike:

  • Anyone who can ride a bike can do it. The motor helps on every climb, so you can choose how hard you want to work.
  • You cover real distance. You can ride from the edge of the city into the mountains and back in a few hours, without a car.
  • You see more than from a van. You hear the rivers and the birds, stop wherever you like, and pass through villages at your own pace.
  • Mixed groups work. A fit rider and a beginner can ride together, each with a different level of assistance.

What you will see

Rivers, lakes and forest

Several rivers flow down from the Sierra Nevada towards Granada, including the Genil and the Monachil. Their valleys are surprisingly green, with water, trees and shade, a different world from the dry hills you see from the city.

Small villages off the tourist track

Around the foothills there are white villages where life is still tied to the land: olive groves, almond trees, vegetable gardens and goats. Riding through them, you see how people here live, what they grow and what they eat, and you can stop for a coffee or lunch with locals rather than tour groups.

Wildlife

Keep your eyes open for birds of prey circling overhead, flocks of sheep and goats with their shepherds, and, higher up, the Iberian ibex (cabra montés) that lives in the park.

When to go

SeasonWhat to expect
Spring (March–May)The best time. Green valleys, full rivers, flowers, often snow on the peaks behind.
Summer (June–September)Hot afternoons. Ride in the morning, bring plenty of water, enjoy the shade of the river valleys.

Winter (December–February)Cold mornings but often sunny and clear. The almond trees blossom from late January.

What to bring

  • Layers. It is cooler in the mountains than in the city, and the weather can change quickly.
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, sun cream and a cap under the helmet. The sun is strong at altitude, even in winter.
  • Water, especially from May to September.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes, ideally trainers or light hiking shoes.
  • A small backpack for your jacket, snacks and camera.

Is it hard?

With an e-bike, much less than you think. You need to be comfortable riding a bicycle, including on gravel paths and some descents. You do not need to be fit: the motor does most of the work on climbs. On our Nature tour, the route has easier and more technical options side by side, so the guide can adapt the day to the group.

Want something shorter first? Our city tours are a good way to get used to an e-bike before a day in the mountains. Read about the best viewpoints in Granada or see all our tours.

Combine it with the city

A good plan for a three-day stay: Alhambra on day one, the Albaicín and its viewpoints on day two (see what to do after the Alhambra), and a day in the Sierra Nevada on day three. It gives you the full picture of Granada: palaces, neighbourhoods and nature, all within a few kilometres.
